Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Releases
2018 State of the Cruise Industry Outlook and Cruise Travel Trends

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the world’s largest cruise industry trade association, has released the 2018 State of the Cruise Industry Outlook. The report offers an in-depth look at the cruise industry’s overall global economic impact as well as the trends impacting cruise travel in 2018.

Current data shows cruise travel is steadily on the rise with a projected 27.2 million passengers expected to set sail in 2018. In 2017, an estimated 25.8 million passengers cruised compared to a confirmed 24.7 million passengers in 2016, an increase of 20.5 percent over five years from 2011-2016. To meet ongoing demand, more ships are scheduled to set sail in 2018. CLIA Cruise Lines are scheduled to debut 27 new ocean, river and specialty ships this coming year.

“It is without question that the cruise industry continues on a growth trajectory, gaining in consumer interest and creating a positive impact on the global economy,” said Cindy D’Aoust, president and CEO, CLIA. “The 2018 State of the Cruise Industry Outlook is a way for us to keep a finger on the pulse of the global cruise industry and its impact on the global economy and identify new travel trends that will influence cruise travel in the future.”

CLIA is also reporting on the global economic impact of the cruise industry in 2016. Cruise industry expenditures generated $126 billion in total output worldwide, supporting more than one million full-time equivalent employees who earned $41 billion in income, an increase from previous years.

Managing Director of CLIA Australasia, Joel Katz, said “With the world’s highest market penetration for cruise, Australasia’s cruise industry is a key contributor to the strong global growth. Cruising generates significant economic activity and value through the employment of thousands of people as well as economic benefits that flow to businesses and regional communities far beyond our ships and ports.”

As part of the 2018 State of the Cruise Industry Outlook, CLIA has forecasted the top nine cruise travel trends for the coming year.

1. All Budgets Will Cruise – The soon to be released, 2018 Cruise Travel Report found that almost all income brackets are cruising. In fact, a third (33%) of the cruisers surveyed who have taken a cruise within the past three years, have a household income less than $80K. While the data shows cruising does skew a bit more to the affluent consumer than other types of holidays, the report indicates almost all levels of income enjoy cruise vacations.

2. Transformational Cruise Travel – The next evolution of experiential travel sees travellers taking a step further and seeking “transformational” experiences. From cultural immersion and voluntourism to extreme adventures, those returning from a cruise will have shift in perspective and a sense of accomplishment. Some upcoming cruise itineraries include the opportunity to indulge in local cuisine, guided tours through small villages and even visits inside private homes. Thrill-seekers can fill bucket lists with chances to swim with sharks in South Africa, ride a Harley Davidson in Alaska or mingle among penguins in the Arctic.

3. Sustainability at Sea – In the coming year there with be an even greater focus on sustainable tourism. Travellers can look forward participating in sustainable practices both onboard and off from recycling and waste management to popular voluntourism initiatives that focus on creating a positive environmental and social impact at destinations around the globe.

4. Millennials Take to the River—River and small ship cruising continues to gain traction among travellers, specifically the Millennial set. With ever-expanding itineraries and destination experiences that reach far beyond walking and coach tours and endless options for the perfect “Instagram moment,” the younger generation is embracing river cruising.

5. Skip-Gen Cruising – Multigenerational cruising is projected to increase in popularity, as forecasted by CLIA’s Travel Agent Cruise Industry Outlook in April 2017. But there’s a twist: “skip-generation” trips, with grandparents and grandchildren traveling together without their parents, are predicted to be highly popular in 2018 and beyond.

6. Travellers Warm to Chilly Destinations –The coming year is projected to see an increase in popularity of colder climate destinations including the Baltics, Canada, Alaska, and Antarctica. With an array of unique excursion options, from penguin watching to ice fishing, these winter wonder destinations are drawing in both new and repeat cruise travellers.

7. Healthy Doses – Travellers are seeking health and wellness trips more than ever before and the cruise industry is responding with services and experiences for the mind and body. Today’s cruise travellers can participate in onboard health wellness seminars led by popular health experts, custom fitness programs, stress management, and spa services. There are even entire cruise itineraries dedicated to weight management and healthy living including Weight Watchers cruises and menus for a variety of dietary needs from diabetic-friendly to plant-based.

8. Smart Travel Technology— The coming year there will be a rise in traveller-friendly onboard technologies. Several cruise lines are introducing wearable technology for cruise guests that provide a personalized and seamless experience while onboard. Ranging from keychains to bracelets to necklaces and more, wearable technology on cruises interacts with sensors on the ship in order to do everything from turning the lights on as a cruiser approaches their cabin to acting as a security agent.

9. Tapping Travel Agents – Travel agents continue to see a steady demand from consumers in planning and executing holidays. Some of the largest factors behind continued popularity of travel agents? Ease of planning, valued expertise, and affordability.  To connect with a CLIA-certified cruise specialist, travellers can visit: https://www.cruising.org.au/Find-a-Cruise-Agent/Cruise-Agent-Search

Billion Dollar Megaliner Returns to Sydney

Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas, the newest, largest and most modern megaliner to sail Australian waters, returns to her Sydney home on Thursday 7 December 2017, marking the return of supercruising for a second season, as well as Royal Caribbean’s 10th season down under.

After making her way from Singapore via Fremantle, Adelaide and Hobart, Ovation of the Seas returns to her Sydney summer home port for her second and significantly longer season down under.

Celebrating her 2nd birthday in April 2018, she is the first brand new cruise ship to be based here and represents the single largest investment in Australia’s cruise industry.
At 348 metres long, 18 decks high and weighing 168,666 tons, Ovation of the Seas is the world’s equal-fourth largest cruise ship and the largest cruise ship to ever sail Australian waters, with capacity for 5,000 guests and 1,500 crew.

“The return of our billion dollar baby, Ovation of the Seas, marks a particularly special milestone for us at Royal Caribbean and for Australian travellers, because it also marks our 10th season down under,” says RCL Cruises managing director, Adam Armstrong.

“Ten years ago, our philosophy was to bring the world’s most cutting-edge cruise product to Australia’s doorstep. In 2007, we embarked on a cruising revolution with the mighty Rhapsody of the Seas and today, we continue this proud tradition of delivering Australians with the world’s best holidays at sea with the ground-breaking, all-new Ovation of the Seas, one of our four Australian-based megaliners,” Armstrong said.

With capacity for close to 5000 guests, Ovation of the Seas will deliver significant economic benefits to the state each time she calls. Her first visit to Sydney for the season is expected to inject $2.5 million into the NSW economy in passenger spend alone, and $33 million into NSW throughout the season with 13 turnarounds at Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Ovation of the Seas arrives in Sydney at 6:30am with 4800 guests onboard hailing from more than 30 different countries. She will dock at the Overseas Passenger Terminal until 6:30pm, before departing on a 10 night New Zealand cruise.

P&O Cruises Announces the Biggest Comedy Festival at Sea
P&O Cruises is giving Aussies a good reason to laugh out loud with the launch of ‘The Big Laugh’ - the biggest comedy festival at sea - onboard Pacific Explorer in June 2018.

Fourteen big-name comics including Jimeoin, Matt Okine, the Scared Weird Little Guys and Dave Callan will deliver 36 shows and a combined 2,000 minutes of jokes at the jam-packed four night festival departing Sydney on June 20, 2018.

The announcement comes as P&O Cruises launch its biggest ever season of comedy comprising 72 dedicated comedy cruises in 2018 and 2019.

Well-known names Dave Hughes, Harley Breen and Claire Hooper will kick off the laughs with a three-night comedy cruise on Pacific Explorer departing Sydney on December 14, 2017.

A selection of additional famous comics will headline the 34 dedicated comedy cruises on offer in 2018 – a mix of two, three and four-night SeaBreaks departing Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Cairns, and Auckland.

In 2019 the laughs will continue with the largest number of dedicated comedy cruises in P&O history and 38 itineraries running from January to October.

P&O Cruises President Sture Myrmell said the introduction of the biggest comedy festival at sea aimed to build on the already extremely popular comedy entertainment offering.

“Aussies and Kiwis are renowned for their great sense of humour and our guests love comedy. It’s been a hugely successful part of our itineraries, with 650 shows now performed across our fleet each year. That’s nearly two comedy shows a day – a figure to rival comedy clubs around the country.

“We’re always looking at ways we can push the boundaries on what our guests can continue to expect from our onboard entertainment. ‘The Big Laugh’ will serve up many different types of comedy genres every day and night, from big marquee performances right through to intimate gigs in our many stylish bars and lounges. There really will be something for everyone,” said Mr Myrmell.

P&O’s new season of comedy follows almost a decade of comedy cruises which began in 2009 with big names Tom Gleeson, Fiona McGary, Mick Meredith and Joel Ozborn.

Today P&O Cruises offers a wide range of comedy performances from Comedy Workshops, Comedy Gala Shows, the Comedy Gong Show where guest performers get judged by the audience, and Cocktails and Comedy, an intimate show to be enjoyed as the sun goes down.

“Since 2009 we’ve delivered 99 dedicated comedy cruises with over 600 comedians, delivering more than 30,000 jokes and entertaining over 170,000 guests. By the end of 2019, we’ll have carried out close to 200 comedy cruises making P&O the biggest provider of comedy down-under,” said Mr Myrmell.

‘The Big Laugh’ on Pacific Explorer departs Sydney on June 20, 2018. Fares start from $529 per person quad share.

CELEBRITY CRUISES ENTICES TRAVELLERS TO ‘SAIL BEYOND’ WITH LAUNCH OF NEW BRAND CAMPAIGN IN AUSTRALIA

Global cruise line Celebrity Cruises has launched a new brand campaign in Australia and New Zealand, encouraging travellers to ‘sail beyond’ traditional notions of cruising by showcasing the line’s enriching and expanding holiday experiences.

The ‘Sail Beyond’ campaign has just launched with a 30 second TVC on SBS and Foxtel, and will be followed by a mix of press, digital and social amplification.

‘Sail Beyond’ was inspired by Celebrity Cruises’ international positioning, and the localised campaign was created for the Australasian market by the cruise line’s long-standing brand and creative agency partner, Hulsbosch. The campaign was delivered across multiple channels by Blue449, Celebrity Cruises’ media agency.

“Sail Beyond invites our guests to open themselves up to the world, to the beauty and diversity that it has to offer,” said Kathryn Valk, Director of Sales & Marketing, Celebrity Cruises, Australia and New Zealand.

“The merged-worlds technique used throughout the creative encourages viewers to explore the possibilities that travelling with a globally immersive travel brand like Celebrity Cruises can offer,” she said.

Hans Hulsbosch, Executive Creative Director at Hulsbosch said Celebrity Cruises is a brand that is synonymous with refined style and service.

“Sail Beyond communicates a desire to go beyond the ordinary, beyond the expected and to discover a world of differences that enrich us. The positioning offers a hopeful and contrasting view of today’s hectic ‘always on’ world and the undercurrents of inward looking attitudes,” he concluded.

Celebrity Cruises, renowned for sophisticated, modern ships and exquisite dining and wine, is also known for its openness, diversity and inclusiveness, positioning itself as a brand with purpose in a crowded market place.

Last month, the line’s CEO and President, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo announced that Celebrity Cruises is the first cruise line to offer legalised same sex marriages at sea. At the same time, Celebrity was announced as the headline sponsor of the Australian LGBTI Awards, to be held in March in Sydney.
Since taking on the role as CEO and President three years ago, Lutoff-Perlo has increased the number of women on ships’ bridges from 5% to 20%, promoted the world’s first female American captain of a cruise ship as well as the first West African female to the bridge of a cruise ship.

A two-year partnership was inked with Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Laureate winner and UN Messenger of Peace, when she was announced as the godmother for Celebrity Cruises’ newest cruise ship, Celebrity Edge. The first of four transformative ships in the brand new Edge Class, Celebrity Edge is currently under construction and due to set sail at the end of 2018.

The Sail Beyond brand campaign launches as the 2017/18 summer cruise season kicks off down under. Celebrity Solstice – rated by readers of Cruise Critic and Australian travel agents as the number one locally based cruise ship – returned to her Sydney home for her sixth season based down under on 20 October, and will sail Australian and New Zealand waters for the next six months. Christa Kinnear from Phil Hoffmann Travel Glenelg has taken out the final cruise prize winning a seven-night river cruise along the Ganges onboard Ganges Voyager.

"Plan a Cruise Month has consistently been a big component of Phil Hoffmann Travel's Marketing calendar across our ten branches in South Australia. Comprising special events and assorted promotions across multiple marketing channels over the whole month, the promotional campaign has generated great interest.

"To have won a prize for doing what I am passionate about is just amazing. And to find out that I am spending seven nights cruising on the Ganges aboard Ganges Voyager, one of the finest luxury river cruise ships, is the absolute cherry on top. I never dreamed I would have the opportunity to experience India from such a unique perspective.”

Australians and New Zealanders Indulge Their Love for
Luxury Cruises during CLIA’s Cruise Month

Offering the height of sophistication and style at sea, more and more Australians and New Zealanders are treating themselves to a luxury cruise.
According to leading cruise industry body Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia, Australians and Kiwis penchant for the finer things in life is helping drive a boom in the luxury cruise sector and prompting the world’s leading operators to increasingly bring their newest and most luxurious vessels down under over the summer months.

To encourage even more holidaymakers to indulge in a luxury cruise, cruise operators are offering value-added extras as part of the world’s largest cruise promotion - CLIA’s annual Plan a Cruise Month.

As part of its Plan a Cruise Month activity this October, CLIA Australasia joined forces with the world’s largest cruise site, Cruise Critic, to conduct a poll on luxury cruising. The local poll found that the destination (42 per cent) and an all-inclusive offering (39 per cent) were the biggest deciding factors for Australians and New Zealanders when booking a luxury cruise. Onboard services and facilities (16 per cent) also played a part in the decision process.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia and Asia Managing Director Joel Katz said there was a misconception that a luxury cruise came with a high price tag just because it was luxurious, when in reality all-inclusive products represented a great value way to travel.

“Luxury cruise lines are taking on the world’s finest resorts, offering French champagne on tap, restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs and something their land-based rivals can’t compete with, a new destination every day. A luxury cruise truly offers the ultimate, relaxing escape for travellers who love the finer things in life and with many operators including excursions, fine dining, drinks and sometimes even wi-fi, an all-inclusive luxury cruise offers incredible value, especially when compared to a similar land offering,” Mr Katz said.

“Because luxury means so much more than just the finest linens, luxury lines are increasingly offering their guests the chance to truly immerse in a destination with exclusive, money-can’t-buy experiences. In line with land-based trends, luxury cruise guests can enjoy special private behind-the-scenes tours of world heritage-listed sites, visits to a local market with a celebrity chef or the chance to be regaled with tales from idols and icons.

“Whether it’s preferable to join a boutique vessel carrying a few hundred guests or a luxury liner offering opulence on a grand scale, on an indulgent itinerary to any corner of the world from Asia to Alaska and Africa to Antarctica, there truly is a luxury cruise for every taste and style.”

Luxury cruise promotions available to Australian and New Zealand CLIA accredited agents during Plan a Cruise Month include:
•    Crystal is offering savings of US$1000 onboard credit per stateroom on select 2017-18 cruises
•    Azamara is offering an upgrade to Club Verandah for the price of a Club Interior room on select 2018 Europe voyages, as well as up to US$100 onboard credit
•    Paul Gaugin is offering US$100 onboard credit per person for any 2018 cruises booked in October

Plan a Cruise Month takes place each October with CLIA offices around the world working with CLIA accredited agents and CLIA member cruise lines to promote cruise holidays.

To start the Alaska program, Queen Elizabeth will sail from Tokyo (Yokohama) to Vancouver with a 27- night voyage on May 5, 2019 (Q915). Guests will cross the International Date Line sailing to the Alaskan port of Kodiak, home to the Alutiiq people for more than 7,000 years. Guests will experience the gold rush spirit of Skagway and Juneau, the native tribes of Ketchikan and the Russian charm of Sitka. The itinerary also includes the Tracy Arm Fjord or Endicott Arm, Icy Strait Point, Hubbard Glacier and Victoria. Launch fares from $1,699 per person.

CELEBRITY CRUISES CHAMPIONS DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVENESS IN AUSTRALIA
CEO & President in Sydney to announce sponsorship of Australian LGBTI Awards and legalised same-sex marriage onboard

Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Celebrity Cruises’ CEO & President, today in Sydney named the cruise line as headline sponsor of the 2018 Australian LGBTI Awards, at the same time revealing Celebrity as the first cruise line in the world to offer legalised same-sex marriage at sea, effective immediately.

Lutoff-Perlo, visiting Sydney for the first time ever this week, said partnering with the 2018 Australian LGBTI Awards was a natural fit for the luxury cruise line which is committed to diversity and inclusion throughout its operations.

“At Celebrity Cruises, we’re committed to opening up the world to everyone, and championing diversity in all its forms. This partnership further cements our commitment to the LGBTI community in Australia, and I’m thrilled to support awards which recognise the incredible efforts of Australians working tirelessly to protect and promote LGBTI rights.”

Lutoff-Perlo also announced Australia’s highest-rated ship, Celebrity Solstice – along with the rest of the line’s 12-strong international fleet – will offer legalised same-sex marriage ceremonies in international waters under Maltese law from today, just in time for Celebrity Solstice’s first Australian sailing when she returns for her sixth local season down under on 20 October 2017.

“Australia is a significant market for Celebrity Cruises, ranking as the third largest source market worldwide. More than 50,000 Australians cruise with us each year - both in Australia and overseas – and we’re thrilled to be the first line to offer legalised same-sex marriage ceremonies, officiated by the Captain, just in time for the new season.”

The motion follows a transformative vote in Malta, where a majority of the Celebrity fleet is registered, which passed the country’s parliament 66-1. The long-awaited referendum opens the door for Celebrity to legally recognize same-sex marriages performed onboard, and have the fleet’s captains officiate the ceremonies.

10 REASONS TO CRUISE IN ASIA THIS SUMMER

It’s so close to Australia

The cruising hubs of Singapore and Hong Kong are so close to Australia, meaning it takes half the time to fly to either of these port cities than to Europe. Once you get there, sit back, relax, and leave the rest of your holiday in the hands of the experts, allowing you more time to enjoy the holiday experience, onboard and off!

You can visit places not accessible by car, train or bus

Cruising in Asia offers travellers the ability to visit hard-to-reach places that are inaccessible by car, bus or train. On cruise lines such as Azamara Club Cruises, the boutique size of ships such as Azamara Journey, means they can fit into smaller ports such as Borocay in the Philipines, Komodo Islands in Indonesia, or sailing up Thailand’s Chao Phraya River to dock right next to the bright lights of Bangkok overnight. The line will also launch 30 brand new ports worldwide in 2018, allowing guests to see more of the world’s hidden gems. The majority of these new ports will cater to smaller ships, such as Georgetown (Penang) in Malaysia and Hambantota in Sri Lanka – the gateway to the beautiful Bundala National Park, which teems with flocks of greater flamingos.

Forget overcrowded, overnight trains and buses!

Many travellers delight in experiencing local modes of travel, but cruising allows guests to swap Asia’s famed crowded buses and trains for luxury. Forget airports, stations, transfers and check-ins! Whilst on board, guests on lines such as Azamara can indulge in health, beauty and restorative treatments at Sanctum Spa, hair styling and a mani-pedi at The Salon, a dip in one of the pools, or acupuncture. What’s more, ships such as Azamara Journey cater to a maximum of 690 guests, which keeps the experience intimate and the service personal.

Watch the sunset in one country, wake up in another

What other form of travel allows you to watch the sunset over the network of rivers, streams and canals of Cochin, India, then wake up in the lush serendipity of Colombo, Sri Lanka? Asia isn’t the sort of destination you can skim over or whiz through; with so many rich cultures and phenomenal sights to explore, an Asia cruise allows you time to immerse yourself within the destinations.

Go to places on the top of your bucket list, as well as those you’ve never considered

Countries such as Japan, Indonesia and Thailand are at the top of many Aussie bucket lists, but an Asia cruise allows you to combine these destinations with those you wouldn’t have otherwise considered. Why not get a taste of Salalah, Oman, the perfume capital of Arabia, or the bright lights of Yeosu, South Korea, or the leafy streets and colonial architecture of Yangon, Myanmar?

It’s a Balinese villa at sea… only better

Balinese-style villas are a top travel trend that fill today’s social media feeds, but an Asia cruise offers guests the opportunity to experience this level of luxury on a grander scale AND immerse themselves in multiple exotic destinations at the same time. Suites onboard an Azamara voyage include ocean views, sea breezes, plush cotton robes and slippers, French bath products, fresh flowers, fine linens, private verandas, complimentary drinks, 24-hour room service, a stateroom attendant and assistant, and a butler who can assist with restaurant and spa reservations, private parties, dinners for two and more!

No stress, no language barriers, no organisation – leave to someone else!

One of the downsides about travelling – especially in a country that doesn’t speak your language – is the stress of planning, travelling between destinations and organising activities. Fortunately on an Asia cruise with a line such as Azamara, guests needn’t bother with this hassle as expert teams curate custom experiences for every travel style, whether it be experiencing local life behind the scenes (Cruise Global, Meet Local), food and wine (Cruise Global, Taste Local), exclusive, custom after-dinner experiences (Cruise Global, Nights Local), or cycling (Cruise Global, Bike Local). Guests also won’t be bothered by large crowds, with each excursion catering to a maximum of 25 guests, to preserve the intimacy of the local experience.

The best of Asian cuisine, both onboard & on shore

The countries of the Asian continent have incredibly rich and diverse cultures, influenced by thousands of years of history, customs, rituals and languages – all of which have shaped a fantastic array of culinary experiences waiting to be discovered. A cruise in Asia allows guests to explore local cuisines both onboard and on shore, as ship chefs often visit local markets to inspire their creations, whilst on shore excursions might see cruisers sample the local speciality such as Okonomiyaki in Osaka, Japan, explore local markets and souks with the ship’s chef in Dubai, or take a local cooking class in Hoi An, Vietnam.

Escape Christmas with the in-laws & enjoy a luxurious Christmas onboard, amongst the best of Asia

This year, why not ditch the hassle, chores and family chaos of the festive season, by escaping on a stress-free Asia Christmas cruise. An Azamara Asia cruise will put a twist on the traditional Aussie Christmas, making for an unforgettable holiday; everything will be taken care of onboard – from Christmas dinner and decorations to festive activities – and you get to explore spectacular, new exotic destinations every day!

Chinese New Year!

One of the most exciting times to cruise in Asia is during Chinese New Year. 2018 will see the Year of the Dog welcomed in from 16th February with celebrations continuing into early March. Visit the local New Year Markets during on shore excursions, which will usually be decorated with lanterns, and pick up New Year goods such as clothing, decorations, food and small arts, or enjoy the local New Year traditional cuisine.

Guests can discover the wonders of Borneo, Vietnam and Thailand on a 14 night round-trip cruise departing Singapore, 25 March 2018. Sailing on Azamara Journey, the cruise makes calls to Bintulu, Bandar Seri Begawan, Kota Kinabalu, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok and Ko Samui. Fares start from AU$3,499/NZ$3,719 per person, twin share for an Interior Stateroom.

Or, guests can explore the delights of Indonesia on a 7 night Borobudur and Bali cruise, sailing on Azamara Journey. Departing Singapore 14 January, 2018, the cruise visits Samarang, Surabaya, Celukan Bawang and finishes up in Bali. Fares start from AU$1,999/NZ$2,139 per person, twin share, for an interior stateroom.

P&O Cruises Appoints New Head of Sales and Marketing

P&O Cruises has announced the appointment of Ryan Taibel to Vice President Sales and Marketing Australia and New Zealand as the brand continues to expand its modern cruise holiday offering and grow the new-to-cruise segment.

Taibel will head up the Sales, Marketing and Digital teams which are responsible for brand strategy and positioning, consumer and trade advertising, strategic partnerships and sponsorships, web and loyalty marketing, research, brand development and communication.

Taibel joined Carnival Australia in 2010 and previously held the role of Sales Director for P&O Cruises where he led the trade sales and marketing activity across the Australian and New Zealand markets.

“Under Taibel’s lead, P&O’s sales and marketing division has an integral role to play in continuing to evolve the cruise holiday offering and share the unique story of Australia and New Zealand’s only home-ported cruise brand with trade and consumers,” said Myrmell.

INTERNATIONAL SLEEP EXPERT UNVEILS AUSTRALIAN TREND - 30% OF AUSTRALIANS USE ANNUAL LEAVE TO CHIP AWAY AT ‘SLEEP DEBT’

New research released today by Princess Cruises shows that Australians are using their annual leave to catch-up on sleep, with a third (30%) of all people taking time off work to chip away at sleep debt, sleep sacrificed during the work week.

This uniquely Australian trend has drawn interest from world-renowned sleep expert, Dr. Michael Breus. A regular on the U.S. Dr Oz Show, Dr Breus is in Australia for the first time, commenting on new research into Australian sleep habits.
“Research shows that just over half of Australians manage to get the recommended 7 hours of sleep per night but when Australians are on holiday, this figure jumps to a staggering 85%, highlighting the importance of prioritising rest during time off work.” said Dr. Breus.

However, the research also shows that work commitments are responsible for around 1 in 4 Australians cutting short their pre-booked annual leave, with urgent deadlines (61%), staff illness (34%), work stress (28%) and important meetings (26%) the highest ranking factors for returning to work early.
The most common impact on sleep is that we just can't turn off our brains (44%) while for 1 in every 5 (20%) it's work stress keeping them up at night. This constantly connected culture is not only having a detrimental effect on our health, it’s also negatively impacting business bottom line; 40% of Australians have taken time off work due to tiredness with a third (30%) of workers reported needing four or more days away from work to recuperate – an estimated cost of $1,400 per employee to a business .

Adding to this, more than 60% of Australians haven't taken annual leave within the past six months and more than 40% haven’t taken annual leave over the past year to two years. With 77% of Australians entitled to 20 days of annual leave per year or more, this shows 150 hours of downtime are not being used: resulting in workers feeling more stressed and anxious than ever before.

Princess Cruises recognises the importance of a good night’s sleep for guests to enjoy every cruise destination and has partnered with Dr. Breus to develop The Princess Luxury Bed, a bed designed specifically to give guests the best night sleep, during their holiday at sea.
“Sleep is a vital, sensory experience that allows our bodies to recharge and recover from mental and physical strains,” said Dr Breus.

“Taking time out away from the office and day-to-day strains may seem daunting but it’s important to allow yourself the time to reset on holiday. It’s important to remember that above all, sleep is a sensory experience and all five of your senses must be prepared for slumber in order for sleep to come easily and last all night long.”

“By collaborating with Princess, I believe we’ve come up with some really unique aspects for not just the bed itself, but the entire experience that will allow guests to sleep really well.”

P&O PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP CONTRIBUTES $50,000 TO SAVE THE CHILDREN’S SUPPORT OF AMBAE ISLAND VOLCANO ERUPTION EVACUEES IN VANUATU

The P&O Pacific Partnership today announced a $50,000 special contribution to Save the Children Australia to support their emergency efforts as thousands of residents are forced to evacuate Ambae Island in Vanuatu following the eruption of the Manaro Voui volcano.

The contribution will be used to support three evacuation centres on neighbouring islands, for water purification units and for personal hygiene kits for women and children.

P&O Cruises Australia President Sture Myrmell approved the special contribution from the P&O Pacific Partnership within an hour of Save the Children calling for support of their evacuation activities.

The evacuation of Ambae’s entire population has been dubbed Vanuatu’s ‘little Dunkirk’ as boats and light planes have been used to transport residents to evacuation centres in a constant shuttle in recent days.

“The people of Vanuatu are very close to our hearts as well as to our guests and I know that our guests will welcome news of this special contribution to assist the people of Ambae in this emergency situation,” Mr Myrmell said.

Ambae is midway between Port Vila and Luganville and cruise ships pass by the island, usually at night, when sailing to or from the two Vanuatu population centres. The island’s volcano is the fabled ‘Bali Hai’ made famous in the movie South Pacific, based on James A Michener’s epic bestselling novel, ‘Tales of the South Pacific’.

Michener was based at Vanuatu with US forces during World War Two and could see Manaro Voui from Espiritu Santo. But currently Ambae is far from being the fictional Bali Hai. It is instead at the centre of a state of emergency as the volcano began to erupt several days ago sending rocks, ash and sulphur gas soaring into the air.

“The whole island of Ambae is being evacuated and Save the Children is on the ground supporting the safe evacuation of men, women and children to neighbouring Islands,” said Save the Children’s Vanuatu Country Director, Georgia Tacey.

With help from the P&O Pacific Partnership, Save the Children is providing sanitation and hygiene facilities to help prevent the spread of disease and providing dignity kits for women and children including personal hygiene products, underwear, nappies, soap, sarongs and solar torches for safety.

The P&O Pacific Partnership is funded by a voluntary one dollar contribution by guests on each P&O cruise booking. Since its introduction, the Partnership has raised more than $1 million to improve early education for children in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands as well as providing essential health care and maternity services for remote families in Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.

It mattered little whether fans were North Queensland Cowboys or Melbourne supporters as the interstate teams prepared for the biggest game of the year.

All the NRL teams were represented on the day and the fans had a great time replicating the P&O Edge Titanic moment.

P&O Cruises and Rugby League value their partnership with NRL matches streamed onboard P&O ships for viewing on the big screen – arguably the best 'grandstand' there is to watch exciting games.

Cruise month sets sail  with deals galore Down Under

With a whole month of cruise deals on the horizon, Australia is preparing to enter a holiday booking frenzy as part of Cruise Lines International Association’s (CLIA) annual Plan a Cruise Month promotion.

In its second year, the global industry-wide promotion is the largest cruise sale in the world with local and international cruise lines offering a range of deals and discounts to encourage holidaymakers to make their next holiday a cruise.

Plan a Cruise Month takes place each October with CLIA offices around the world working with CLIA accredited agents and CLIA member cruise lines to promote cruise holidays.

Ensuring October is officially becoming known as ‘cruise month’ down under, the month also marks the start of the cruise season in Australia with the first international ships arriving for the summer. This season Australia will see around 60 ships cruising local waters.

CLIA Australasia & Asia Managing Director Joel Katz said, “This October’s Plan a Cruise Month is set to be bigger and better than ever with great deals available across a range of popular cruise holidays including luxury, expedition, ocean and river cruising.”

“During Plan a Cruise Month CLIA bands together with its member cruise lines and accredited agents to raise awareness of cruising and it’s also the perfect time to plan next year’s holiday and nab a bargain,” Mr Katz said.

“With nearly 1.3 million Australians taking a cruise each year, there are more and more holidaymakers discovering how fun and relaxing a holiday at sea is. It’s hard to beat the value of a cruising holiday with accommodation, transport, main meals and a range of onboard activities and entertainment included in the fare but during October, the value is even more irresistible.”

From cabin upgrades to passenger or cabin savings, examples of special cruise deals this October include:

An exclusive deal only accessible to CLIA travel agents, Uniworld is offering a stateroom upgrade on any 2018 voyage in Europe, India, Vietnam & Cambodia booked between October 8-14, 2017
Princess Cruises is offering savings of up to $2100 per stateroom on select cruises across Europe, Alaska, Asia, Japan, the Americas, Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific
MSC is offering 50 per cent off for the second passenger on select departures in the Mediterranean, Arabian Peninsula, Northern Europe, the Caribbean and repositioning cruises.
Crystal is offering savings up to US$1000 per stateroom on select departures in 2017-18 including its river, ocean and yacht itineraries.

“With industry research finding that more than eight out of ten travellers use a travel agent to plan and book a cruise holiday, using a CLIA accredited travel agent during Plan a Cruise Month is the best way to book a cruise,” Mr Katz added.

P&O Cruises To Revolutionise Its Guest Experience With Ocean Medallion-Enabled Grand Class Vessel in 2020

P&O Cruises’ guests will be at the leading edge of a global revolution in the cruise experience when the line welcomes its first Ocean Medallion-enabled ship, Golden Princess, to the brand in 2020.

Ocean Medallion is a new enhanced cruise holiday experience that uses a wearable device – powered by a first-of-its-kind interactive technology platform - to enable a level of service and personalisation never before considered possible.

P&O Cruises will offer its own unique Ocean Medallion enabled guest experiences in a way that makes it even easier to offer great value holidays to like-minded Aussies who want to celebrate good times with the home-grown brand.

The technology, which is expected to be a game-changer for the guest experience, will be launched first on Princess Cruises later this year on Regal Princess in the Caribbean, followed by five additional ships in 2018 including the 2600-guest Golden Princess in Australia.  Additional Princess ships will be Ocean Medallion enabled in 2019 and 2020 including the larger 3000+ guest Ruby Princess which will replace Golden Princess in serving Princess guests in Australia.

Carnival Australia Executive Chairman Ann Sherry also announced that Carnival Cruise Line intends to increase its Australia operation to two ships sailing full-time in 2020.

Ms Sherry said the Corporation was strategically realigning the Australian business to ensure it was at the cutting edge of guest expectations and had solid foundations.

“Carnival’s commitment to this market and the decision to put P&O Cruises’ guests at the heart of industry innovation through Ocean Medallion is a mark of respect for the Australian consumer,” Ms Sherry said.

Key decisions are:

Ocean Medallion-enabled Golden Princess will sail under the P&O Cruises brand from 2020.

P&O Cruises’ fleet will be refreshed over time.

Princess Cruises will replace Golden Princess with the larger 3000+ guest Ruby Princess which will be Ocean Medallion-enabled before her arrival, sailing alongside flagship Majestic Princess.

Carnival Cruise Line intends to increase its Australia operation to two ships sailing full-time in 2020.  The detailed deployment will be announced in May 2018.
As part of the strategic realignment, Carnival Splendor will remain within Carnival Cruise Line’s global fleet.

“Seven of Carnival Corporation’s nine cruise brands sail in this market and we intend to further strengthen our leadership position,” Ms Sherry said.

“In fact, this is a year of milestones for our Australian business:  P&O Cruises marks a staggering 85 years as the home-grown cruise line, Princess Cruises celebrates more than 40 years sailing in Australia while Carnival Cruise Line notches up its five year anniversary.

“Our brands have pioneered the growth of the industry and set the industry up for success, and today’s announcement is about taking deliberate and strategic steps for the future of the business.  We are making sure our locally-based fleet is fit-for-purpose and is at the cutting edge of revolutionising the cruise experience for Australian guests.”

Azamara Club Cruises Announces Expansion Of Boutique Fleet

Boutique cruise line Azamara Club Cruises has announced it has entered into an agreement to purchase a sister ship to Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest, with delivery taking place in March 2018.

“We are pleased to expand our portfolio by 50%, allowing us to visit even more regions of the world through the acquisition of this sister ship,” said Larry Pimentel, President and CEO of Azamara Club Cruises. “Our loyal guests and travel partners have asked for this expansion for a long time; we are very pleased to deliver this to them.”

The new addition, Azamara Pursuit, is comparable in size to Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest. As such, it will also allow visits to unique ports that larger ships are unable to reach. Together, the three ships will support the brand’s commitment to enrich destination immersion around the world, by staying longer in port to allow guests to experience more.

The ship’s décor will be updated to match the brand’s upmarket position. These updates will be similar to the renovations recently introduced on the Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest, bringing guests the experience of a boutique hotel at sea.

Information about deployment and itineraries for Azamara Pursuit will be available in October. For additional information please visit www.azamara.com/pursuit.

Love, Lust and Hand Grenades – the Explosive New Show on P&O Cruises’ Pacific Explorer

Internationally acclaimed Australian director Scott Maidment, the creative mastermind behind Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour and the sell-out Sydney Opera House circus spectacle Blanc de Blanc, has launched his latest production onboard P&O Cruises Pacific Explorer.

The new Love Riot show is an explosive adventure featuring world-class dance, comedy, circus and acrobatics with choreography by LA’s Kevin Maher and set and costume design by James Browne.

The 90-minute performance typically found in a spiegeltent rather than a cruise ship features an impressive world-class line up of elite artists and contortionists that dangle from silk sheets and trapezes, unicycle through the audience and perform awe-inspiring acts.

Love Riot is exclusive to Pacific Explorer’s glamorous new cabaret entertainment venue Black Circus where guests receive a cocktail and souvenir glass on arrival. The VIP Love Riot package includes a five-course degustation dinner.

Brisbane-born Scott Maidment, who founded Strut & Fret Production House, said he wanted to combine the best international talent into one great spectacle, Love Riot.

“I’ve directed shows in Budapest, London, Bogota and Singapore but never before for a cruise ship. My latest venture was about giving the P&O audience an experience they wouldn’t expect and remember long after their holiday.

“The formula for Love Riot takes the best internationally recognised artists from the US, Canada, Europe and Australia and puts a modern spin on their skills.

“Love Riot is not a passive experience - we want the audience to be involved. It’s about the talent being present and engaging with passengers every night and that’s the secret to the show,” Mr Maidment said.

P&O Cruises’ Director of Entertainment Brett Annable said the latest production aimed to shake up the traditional cruise entertainment offering and bring more choice to the market.

“Love Riot is like no other entertainment at sea and is more in keeping with the spectacular aerial circus artistry found at major festivals around the world.

“We wanted to challenge the conventional production shows found on cruise ships and offer our guests a hilarious, high-energy, premium experience that would really get people talking!

“In addition to Love Riot, guests on Pacific Explorer can also enjoy five other production shows that are all inclusive in the cruise fare including the brand-new Rock stage show.

“We also host three themed parties such as the opulent Gatsby-themed production and Bianco white party and late-night comedy and game-shows at our two entertainment venues, the Black Circus and Marquee Show Lounge. There really is something for everyone to enjoy every evening,” Mr Annable said.

Pacific Explorer’s cruises include a 4-night X750 SeaBreak cruise departing Sydney on November 30, 2017. Fares start from $499* per person quad share.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)
Releases 2017 Asia Cruise Trends and North Asia Economic Impact Study

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), today, releases the findings from two new reports about the Asian Cruise market. The first, 2017 Asia Cruise Trends, is a comprehensive analysis of the cruise industry within Asia. The second, the 2016 North Asia Economic Impact Study, reveals the economic impact the cruise industry has had to the North Asian market.

“While the Asian cruise market has grown tremendously within the past four years – it has the potential to capture a much larger percentage of the Asian population, which could catapult Asia’s capacity share ahead of competing markets,” said Cindy D’Aoust, President and CEO, CLIA. “With these studies, CLIA aims to provide industry stakeholders with actionable, meaningful information to assist in structuring and supporting this emerging region.”

Joel Katz, Managing Director of CLIA Australasia and Asia said, “These two reports together provide extremely valuable data on what is happening in Asian cruising, its current size and recent growth trends.  While we expected Asia to experience record-breaking growth, we are astonished at the rate at which the region is emerging as one of the most significant cruise destinations and cruise source markets in the world.”
Highlights from the 2017 Asia Cruise Trends Includes:

•       More Passengers: A total of 3.1 million Asians took cruises in 2016, 55 per cent more than in 2015. Of these, 68 per cent or 2.1 million were from mainland China, a market which almost doubled as it grew by 99 per cent last year and at a 4-year CAGR of 76 per cent, confirming China as the world’s fastest growing major source of passengers.

•        More Ships in Asian Waters - In 2017, 66 cruise ships are being deployed in Asian waters. Five of these are mega ships (more than 3,500 passenger capacity), 13 are large (2,000 to 3,500 passengers), 26 of the deployed ships will be mid-size, and 17 seasonal small upscale ships will be active in the Asian region. In addition, the Expedition niche will have 5 ships deployed in limited seasons. In 2013, there were only 43 ships cruising in Asia, marking a 53 per cent growth since 2013.

•       Increased Operating Days in 2017 – The Asian cruise industry has 10,196 operating days in Asia scheduled for 2017, an increase of 137 per cent from 4,307 operating days in 2013, and an increase of 25 per cent over the 8,171 operating days in 2016. The increased operating days in 2017 provide a total capacity for 4.24 million passengers. This passenger capacity has nearly tripled from 1.51 million passengers in 2013.

•       Asian Travelers Prefer Exploring Asian Destinations - Asian travellers predominantly take cruises within the region. Asian cruise only passengers grew at the fastest rate mostly due to the increase in the Chinese market. In fact, out of the 2,086 sailings scheduled for Asian waters in 2017 - 1,992 cruises (or 95.4 per cent) will remain within Asia, with exclusive Asia-to-Asia itineraries, while an additional 94 voyages are scheduled to pass through the Asia region in 2017. Total sailings in and through Asia have seen strong growth over the past four years, increasing 142 per cent, from 861 cruises and voyages in 2013 to 2,086 in 2017.

Highlights from the 2016 North Asia Economic Impact Study:

·         The direct economic contribution of cruise tourism across all of North Asia consisted of the $3.23 billion in direct expenditures, $1.51 billion in value added goods and services, and 23,697 full- and part-time jobs paying $754.5 million in employee compensation

o   Wholesale & Retail Trade ($962.3M), Other Services & Government ($693.9M), and Financial & Business Services ($679.5M) were the primary direct beneficiaries of cruise tourism spending. Combined, these three sectors accounted for approximately 72 per cent of the regional direct impacts with $2.34 billion in direct expenditures, $1.18 billion in value-added goods and services, and 19,252 full- and part-time jobs paying $594.4 million in employee compensation.

·         The indirect and induced economic contribution is generated by the spending of the directly impacted businesses and their employee, which is then spread throughout the corporate and consumer sectors of each economy. These impacts totalled $3.98 billion in output, $1.72 billion in value-added goods and services, and 27,934 full- and part-time jobs paying $749.6 million in employee compensation.

o   Manufacturing, Financial and Business Services, and Agriculture accounted for approximately 79 per cent of the total indirect and induced impacts with $3.16 billion in output, $1.22 billion in value-added and 19,893 full- and part-time jobs paying $491.1 million in employee compensation.

·         Combining the direct, indirect and induced contributions, the total economic contribution of cruise tourism in the three North Asia economies amounted to $7.21 billion in output, $3.23 billion in value-added goods and services and 51,631 full- and part-time jobs paying $1.5 billion in employee compensation.

·         CLIA member cruise lines reported that they employed a total of 19,304 residents of North Asia as shore side staff or crew. China, alone, accounts for 98 percent of this total with 18,974 employees. Including these cruise line employees and staff, the total employment impact increases to 70,935 jobs paying $1.8 billion in compensation across the three North Asia countries.

P&O Cruises’ Pacific Explorer has “Something for Everyone” in New Campaign Starring TV Personality Dave Hughes

P&O Cruises has revealed Pacific Explorer’s hottest onboard activities in a new campaign featuring much-loved Australian comedian Dave Hughes.

The popular larrikin appears in a surprising twist at the end of P&O’s new television commercial which features cruise holiday-goers sampling the ship’s many features.

The commercial gives viewers a glimpse of Pacific Explorer’s traditional Neopolitan pizzeria 400 Gradi, signature P&OEdge Adventure Park, stand-out burlesque show Love Riot and the longest and wildest waterslides at sea.

Australian comedian and radio personality Dave Hughes said he was a big fan of cruise holidays after performing stand-up comedy on a P&O cruise ship last year.

“I had a fantastic experience performing on a P&O Comedy Cruise in December and brought my family onboard for the occasion. It was probably the easiest holiday we’ve ever had,” Mr Hughes said

“Family holidays can require a lot of effort and planning but on a cruise holiday the hard work is all done for you. You get to pick the destination then just unpack once and relax. All you need to worry about is what activities and tours you might like to try that day.”

P&O Cruises’ Vice President of Sales and Marketing Ryan Taibel said the new marketing campaign showed Pacific Explorer’s wide range of onboard activities in a fun and fresh way.

“Pacific Explorer is the latest ship in the P&O fleet and the only ship to be homeported in Sydney all year round. We know Australians are interested in booking a cruise holiday on the latest product so we decided to build on that interest with a fun and engaging campaign,” Mr Taibel said.

“We wanted to show our audience a sample of Pacific Explorer’s 60 onboard activities to show that the ship really does have something for everyone.

“Dave Hughes is a class act who also loves cruise holidays and makes for a humorous finishing touch to the commercial. We’re sure he’ll get people talking,” Mr Taibel said.

P&O Cruises’ Pacific Explorer ‘Something for Everyone’ campaign includes a 30” TVC and 45” cinema spot that will run until October 14, 2017.

A series of 11 15” content pieces will run across digital channels nationwide and on P&O Cruises’ owned social media channels.

Pacific Explorer’s cruises include a 3-night Food and Wine cruise departing Sydney on November 10, 2017. Fares start from $399* per person quad share.

AUSTRALIA COUNTS DOWN TO SUMMER’S ROYAL RETURN

Three cruise lines, six incredible ships and more than 300,000 unique cruise holidays
The countdown is on to the start of the international cruise season, and making a welcome return is Royal Caribbean – renowned for the biggest, newest and most modern ships in Australia and the world. Superliner Radiance of the Seas, arriving in Sydney on Sunday 8 October 2017, marks not only the first of the company’s cruise ships to return to our shores, but also Royal Caribbean’s tenth season based down under.

With six exceptional Australia-based ships, RCL Cruises - comprising Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises - will offer an incredible selection of 97 cruises available throughout Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and Asia during the 2017/18 summer season, delivering an injection of AUD$198 million to the Australian economy in passenger spend alone.

Joining Radiance of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s groundbreaking Ovation of the Seas, returning for her second and longest SuperCruising season yet, as well as family-favourites Voyager of the Seas and Explorer of the Seas, known as the South Pacific Sisters.

Celebrity Solstice – voted Australia’s favourite ship by Aussie travel agents and readers of Cruise Critic – will celebrate her sixth season in Australia, arriving in Sydney on 20 October 2017 for her first sampler cruise in three seasons.

Meanwhile boutique cruise line, Azamara Club Cruises returns for her third and biggest season down under yet, when Azamara Journey arrives via Australia’s west coast in January, making maiden calls to Adelaide and Perth, as well as a number of regional destinations.

“You know summer’s in the air when the cruise ships return, and as this is our 10th season since the mighty Rhapsody of the Seas first sailed from Sydney, it is particularly special for us at Royal Caribbean – and more importantly, our travel partners and guests, past and present,” says RCL Cruises managing director, Adam Armstrong.

“The arrival of Rhapsody of the Seas 10 years ago marked a new era in cruising for Australia. Nobody had ever experienced a level of imagination quite like Royal Caribbean’s in local waters before, and guests were blown away by features which, once upon a time, could only be found on Royal, like the rock-climbing wall.”

“Ten years ago, our philosophy was to bring the world’s most cutting-edge cruise product to Australia’s doorstep. Today, we continue this proud tradition of delivering Australians with the world’s best holidays at sea – most recently with the all-new Ovation of the Seas. And today, we make a commitment to Australians that they can expect continued excellence in cruising, and even bigger, better, bolder and more modern ships from Royal Caribbean for the next 10 years.”

“To mark our 10 year milestone we’ll be announcing some very special birthday surprises for guests and agents throughout the season - so watch this space.”

Royal has plenty in store for guests this summer, including the return of Ovation of the Seas for a significantly longer season. Together Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas and Radiance of the Seas will offer 76 sailings ranging from two to 23 nights, calling on 46 ports during the 2017/18 season. Royal Caribbean retains the title of the largest cruise line in Sydney over the summer season – with bigger ships and more capacity than any other cruise line.

This 2017/18 season will also see a number of new cruise ports for Azamara Club Cruises, with Azamara Journey making maiden calls to Perth (Fremantle), Exmouth, Bunbury, Albany and Esperance in Western Australia, plus Adelaide and Kangaroo Island in South Australia.

This will be Azamara’s third and biggest season yet in Australia. Not only will both Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest visit Australia’s shores in one calendar year, the season will also herald the very first of Azamara's country intensive voyages – brand new itineraries which focus on a single country. Plus Azamara Journey will end her 2017/18 season with the line’s inaugural World Journey, a 102-night extravaganza from Sydney to London, calling at 60 ports in 29 countries along the way.

Meanwhile modern luxury line Celebrity Cruises will offer 17 sailings ranging from two to 18 nights, calling at 32 ports during the season. The highlight of the season is the return of Celebrity Solstice’s two-night weekend sampler cruise – back by popular demand after a three-season hiatus. The sampler, departing Sydney on Friday 20 October, is the perfect chance for Australians to trial Australia’s favourite cruise ship, Celebrity Solstice.

Plus, Celebrity Cruises will offer guests even more opportunity to explore destinations at night, with overnight calls to Cairns, Sydney and Melbourne.

The 55,820-tonne vessel‘s first voyage departs this afternoon on a nine-night cruise to Papua New Guinea stopping at P&O’s latest destination, the Conflict Islands, which is well known for having the world’s most biodiverse reef systems

Pacific Eden will undertake 10 roundtrip cruises from Cairns this year including a mix of longer itineraries to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands and short SeaBreaks to Fraser Island and the Whitsundays. It will be the first time P&O has cruised to Airlie Beach and Fraser Island round-trip from Cairns.

More than 14,000 holidaymakers will sail on Pacific Eden between now and November 6, 2017. A third (36 per cent) of guests will travel from interstate to join the ship providing a boost to local businesses.

P&O’s record Cairns cruise season is expected to inject around $11 million into the local economy in guest and crew spending, provedoring and port charges.

Earlier this month, Pacific Eden underwent a multi-million dollar dry dock in Singapore where she emerged with two newly refurbished entertainment venues.

Pacific Eden’s two-storey Marquee Show Lounge was given a stylish new look-and-feel with a dramatic black, white and emerald-green colour scheme, custom wallpaper and unique artworks.

Popular late night hot spot, The Dome, was updated to take on a contemporary nautical theme with navy blue and white hues, drapes and soft lighting.

Select suites and balcony cabins received new carpets and outdoor furniture while the cinema, spa, gym and kids clubs were revitalised. In total, 11,000 square metres of new carpet was fitted on the 1500-guest ship.

Completing her transformation, Pacific Eden now wears the signature Southern Cross livery emblazoned on her hull, which was debuted by Pacific Explorer in June this year.

P&O Cruises President Sture Myrmell said Pacific Eden’s presence in Cairns provided a convenient, practical and great value opportunity for locals to cruise from their doorstep.

“It’s now even easier for residents of Far North Queensland to take a break and explore the idyllic remote beaches, culture and history found on the relatively untouched Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea,” Mr Myrmell said.

“Australians based interstate can combine a short break in the Tropical North with a cruise holiday to experience the world famous Great Barrier Reef, hidden white sand beaches and incredible wildlife at Australia’s sunny gateway to the tropics.”

Pacific Eden's cruises include a 4-night Whitsundays cruise departing Cairns on September 12, 2017. Fares start from $249* per person quad share.

IT’S A “TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART” AS DNCE AND BONNIE TYLER CELEBRATE RARE CELESTIAL MOMENT ON ROYAL CARIBBEAN

The Entertainers Perform a Modern Take on Tyler’s Classic as Oasis of the Seas Sails Toward the Total Solar Eclipse

Today the only place on Earth to see Bonnie Tyler and DNCE perform “Total Eclipse of the Heart” during the Great American Eclipse – a total solar eclipse 99 years in the making – was on board Royal Caribbean International’s adventure-packed Oasis of the Seas.

Tyler, known as the international first lady of rock, joined multi-platinum selling band DNCE in an exclusive performance of the popular ballad for guests on the cruise line’s once-in-a-lifetime Total Eclipse Cruise.

“As if moving our ship to sail along the eclipse’s path of totality to give our guests 100 percent visibility of this phenomenon wasn’t enough, we wanted to take it to another level – just above ‘out of this world’,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International.

“Royal Caribbean is known as the most innovative cruise line, always pushing to create bigger and bolder adventures for vacationers. We’re excited to have DNCE and Bonnie on board, and even more thrilled to have seen the looks on our guests’ faces when she was brought on stage to sing ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart.’ This is what we live for – to make unforgettable memories. ”

As the moon made its way to cover the sun for the celestial event of the century, DNCE took center stage in Oasis of the Seas’ open-air AquaTheater, performing the band’s chart-topping hits, including “Kissing Strangers,” “Body Moves” and, of course, “Cake by the Ocean.”

The concert culminated in the ultimate performance by DNCE and the Welsh-born singer. All eyes were on Joe Jonas and Tyler, alongside DNCE bandmates Cole Whittle, JinJoo and Jack Lawless, as they sang a powerful remix of Tyler’s classic, paying tribute to the solar eclipse.

While on board Oasis of the Seas, one of the world’s three largest cruise ships, the performers will explore the ship’s seven distinct neighborhoods and experience unmatched adventure from flying across the ship on a zip line nine decks high to catching waves on one of the ship’s two FlowRider surf simulators, and scaling to great heights on one of the ship’s signature rock walls. The 7-night Total Eclipse Cruise set sail on Aug. 20 from Orlando (Port Canaveral), Florida and will visit Eastern Caribbean destinations including Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; and Nassau, Bahamas.

Royal Caribbean International is an award-winning global cruise brand with a 48-year legacy of innovation and introducing industry “firsts” never before seen at sea. The cruise line features an expansive and unmatched array of features and amenities only found on Royal Caribbean including, jawdropping, Broadway-style entertainment and industry-acclaimed programming that appeals to families and adventurous vacationers alike. EARLY this morning, the dry dock in Singapore was being reflooded and Pacific Eden was set to emerge with a whole new look and doesn't she look fabulous?

With the spectacular signature Southern Cross livery on her bow, Pacific Eden gives added meaning to the word WOW!!!!
Sture Myrmell and Paul Rutherford sent this fantastic photo this morning.

Eden underwent a 12-day transformation in Singapore ahead of the start of her highly-anticipated Cairns cruise season.
The two-storey Marquee Show Lounge has been given a stylish new look and feel with a dramatic black, white and emerald-green colour scheme, custom wallpaper and unique artworks -- more fabulous design work by Petra Ryberg.

Popular late night hot spot, The Dome, has been updated to take on a contemporary nautical theme with dark navy blue and white hues, drapes and soft lighting.

Select mini-suites and balcony cabins received new carpets and outdoor furniture whilst the cinema, spa, gym and HQ and HQ Plus have been revitalised. In total, 11,000 square metres of new carpet was laid.
The current dry dock followed Eden's  extensive three-week refurbishment undertaken alongside sister-ship Pacific Aria in late 2015.

Sture Myrmell said the latest refurbishment was part of P&O's commitment to continually evolve and enhance the design of the fleet.

"Since Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden underwent their extensive transformation in 2015, we've built a reputation as a modern Australian cruise line that provides memorable holidays in a unique setting," Sture said.

"A key part of that process is to deliver a stylish, modern look and feel across the ship's public spaces and produce venues that would be more at home in a high-end resort than on a cruise ship.

"The Marquee Show Lounge and The Dome are two of Pacific Eden's most popular venues and the new upgrades will continue to push the boundaries on our designs and what passengers can continue to expect from our fleet."

Pacific Eden was scheduled to emerge from dry dock ahead of a 9-night sailing from Cairns to the Conflict Islands on August 24.

Earth Moving Contractor with a ‘Photo Wizard’ Eye on a P&O Cruises’ Assignment to Capture the South Pacific

In his day job, Greg Barnett runs a successful earth moving business in Brisbane but his passion for photography has led to a special P&O Cruises’ photographic assignment in the South Pacific.

The combination of wet weather in Brisbane stopping earth moving work earlier this year and a
spontaneous decision to have an impromptu family holiday in Sydney to see the Vivid Festival resulted in Greg capturing this amazing image of Pacific Explorer passing Pacific Jewel.

Greg produced the ethereal image of two magnificent P&O ships with Sydney Harbour in the rain-washed glow of a spectacular sunrise breaking through the remains of a just passing storm.

There was only one thing for it after P&O Cruises President Sture Myrmell saw Greg’s iconic image.
“We decided immediately to send Greg and his camera on a cruise as our guest to capture his signature view of some wonderful destinations in the South Pacific,” Mr Myrmell said. “We can’t wait to see the results.”

Greg and his wife Carol will leave Brisbane on August 19 on board Pacific Dawn for a seven-night ‘Pacific Island Hopper’ cruise from Brisbane to Noumea, Lifou and Port Vila.

Greg’s mission is to capture the cruise, the onboard experience and the great destinations through his very creative eye.

For his part, Greg is overwhelmed that his Sydney image of Pacific Explorer and Pacific Jewel has resulted in a photographic assignment from P&O.

Greg explained that he happened to be in Sydney with his family for the Vivid when he noticed Pacific Explorer sailing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge with Pacific Jewel berthed nearby at the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

“We were down in Sydney for the weekend staying in an apartment overlooking the harbour,” Greg said. “My son wanted to go for an early morning swim in the rooftop pool and it was then that I saw the two P&O ships. I thought it would make a fantastic photograph and I grabbed my camera.

“Over the years, I have purchased some very good camera equipment because I love photography but I never imagined it would lead to a photographic assignment. We are really looking forward to the cruise and capturing some great images.”

Aussie winged explorers offer Captain Bilton a hand!

WHEN P&O Cruises' Pacific Explorer departed Sydney for Mooloolaba yesterday, Captain Roger Bilton had some unexpected guests arrive on the bridge.

Two inquisitive Sydneysiders – colourful lorikeets who had bypassed check-in and normal security procedures – flew in to lend the Captain a hand in the departure from the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

The two birds stuck around just long enough to know that the Captain didn’t really need two honorary ‘first mates’ for the harbour exit manoeuvre but he appreciated their kind offer.

Both chirpers soon realised that a career at sea wasn’t for them and were soon on their way for parts unknown at their usual cruising altitude.
Trust a pair of inquisitive Sydney lorikeets to stick their beaks in to see what was going on.
